Eating for Performance: Benedikt Magnusson Talks Diet

For those of you who are unaware, Benedikt Magnusson is the world's strongest deadlifter pulling 1015 lbs in the 308+ weight class. We've always been curious about what a man as large as Benni eats. He's posted a video discussing his diet.

Before you watch this video, I want to state a couple of things that really stand out for me:

1. Benni talks about not sticking to a diet - to eat whatever he feels like eating because he cares about performance more than anything else. This is a very unique way to look at diet.

Most people right now are riding the "eat like a bodybuilder train like a powerlifter" wagon so it is nice to see someone as advanced as Benni confirming my own thoughts on this.

2. Benni emphasizes eating "bad" but with a very strict clause: his health cannot be adversely affected. He lists his priorities: cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, etc. You know, at one time big powerlifters used to talk about eating McDonald's before training and they'd complain of health issues, but loving their life because they lifted so much.

Due to this there is a backlash and now people are hopping on that hybrid lifestyle. Benni on the other hand, is a huge guy, a strong guy, and he's walking the middle path. I like that.

3. When he talks about BCAAs he says that he doesn't like to get stuck in the mode of "food preparation" all the time. He likes to be able to just integrate something new (like BCAAs for him) into his lifestyle. I am a lot like that.

I don't like to get caught up in food prep and thinking about it so much because it sucks the fun out of food.
