Want to see some super heavy front squats for reps?

I put up videos of impressive squats and deadlifts all the time so today I decided to share with you a video of a less mainstream lift: the front squat. In this video, Jean Francois Caron performs a front squat with 500 pounds for 12 reps!

I love the deadlift. If you've ever read any of my blog posts you will already know this. I am deeply passionate about the deadlift almost to the exclusion of the back squat. One exercise which I have found to be a great builder for my deadlift has been the front squat. I used to do this exercise very regularly and I have recently begun training it aggressively again.

I find the front squat mimics the load of the deadlift in the sense that if you position the bar correctly you will feel all the weight resting on your lats. In fact, this is the basic requirement to perform a heavy front squat. A lot of lifters complain about the front squats - especially beginners because the barbell almost always leaves some bruises on the delts and it can be a bit uncomfortable to perform because the barbell tends to roll into the neck and prevent the lifter from breathing. But in a few workouts you get used to the position and you learn how to handle the load in a way that the barbell sits comfortably on your scapula and delts and doesn't completely choke you to death in the process.

I used to feel like the odd one out because most lifters prefer the back squat to the front squat but it was always the opposite for me - to the extent that my front squat is just a mere 30 pounds behind my best back squat. Then I realized a lot of deadlift enthusiasts feel the same as me and also prefer to perform front squats over back squats and the reason for this is because all of us find moving the weight to be very similar to how we perform the deadlift. The load of the barbell falls directly onto our lats and we need to use a lot of hip drive to lockout at the top.


Additionally, from the strict perspective of mobility only, I have found that most people have an easier time adjusting to depth on the front squat than the back squat. Front squats tend to load the core more aggressively and this allows the trainees to really push open their legs and push their knees out thereby getting those extra inches of depth. I don't feel that depth is all too important but getting the hips used to handling loads in a sort of "compromised" position is always good for bigger loads and other lifts you are training more aggressively like the deadlift or back squat.

In my old gym we used to have people doing back squats first and front squats as a secondary lift to that. But, if getting a big squat is not high on your priority list I think a lot of people will benefit from switching the order and doing front squats before back squats.
