Deadlifts against QUAD Bands & Anderson Front Squats feat Dr Kanishk Jain w/ VIDEO (16 Nov 2015)

Last night’s deadlift workout was all about pulling against some strong bands, doing regular deadlifts and then completing the workout with some singles on Anderson front squats. I also had Kanishk visiting over the weekend so I have merged both our training sessions.

The way this video has been edited shows you all my sets of band resisted deadlifts and then after that Kanishk’s and my regular deadlifts will be featured alternatively and then Anderson front squats right at the end.

I am regaining my strength at a reasonable rate and I am very happy with that. The bands I am using are APT Pro Wrist Straps #1 bands which have been double looped therefore the tension is four times the amount because all four strands of the bands are weighing down on the bar. I expected 175 kilos at the end to be a strong struggle set instead I surprisingly locked it out! So next week I will try to turn that single into a double and I’ll extend a set for a new struggle set with a heavier weight.

I wanted to push beyond 215 kilos on the regular deadlifts but I decided to play conservative last minute. Instead, I decided to throw in a set of higher rep deadlifts with 185 kilos. As you can see, it was relatively easy and I could have gone on for 3-4 more reps but I’ve left something for next time.

I want to take a moment to discuss Kanishk’s training. He’s been working hard in his MD program at the hospital and now that he is in his second year he has some time to train. He’s taken a full year off lifting so his strength has dropped but I’ve been helping him get stronger. At his peak, which was just before he took a year off from lifting; Dr. Kanishk had a relative max (which means he could do this day in and day out regardless of it being a good day or a bad day or whatever) – a relative max of 435 pounds that is 197 kilos approximately. You can see he has worked back to 177.5 kgs but this time he is not going to focusing on how much ground he has lost. The goal now is to take this to the max and hurtle through 435 like it never existed. In this workout Kanishk has hit his relative max, plus done some volume training after that.


Back to me: in the workout prior to my deadlifts, I had performed 75 kgs for 20 reps and then 125 kgs for 3 reps of squats and I was wondering if it would interfere with this workout but this workout was smooth sailing so I am really happy to see that doing some sort of squat variation for low-ish volume is not impairing my performance on deadlifts. After deadlifts I decided to do some actual heavy Anderson front squats. I haven’t done this variation in a long time and I didn’t know what to expect so I am very happy with what went down.
